by markadmin Posted: Thursday, 3/28/2013After watching Mayor Menino’s announcement that he would not seek a 6th term, I started perusing some of the many photos that I had snapped over the years, of him for the Boston Herald. Earlier today I posted some light-hearted photos and a funny Menino video moment. On a less light-hearted note, here are some Menino moments that moved me. Captions include the 2006 moment he consoled Isaura Mendes shortly after the community anti-violence activist found out that she had lost a second son in 11 years to a shooting, and his annual trip to the Pine St. Inn to carve a Thanksgiving turkey. This time he brought his grandson Will Fenton, age 9 years, and took a “teachable moment” to show him the Inn’s sleeping quarters.
(11/27/08-Boston,MA) Boston Mayor, Thomas Menino, with grandson Will Fenton, age 9 years in tow, visited the Pine Street Inn today to carve some turkey and say hi to the residents.
(03/05/07-Boston,MA) Three speakers wait their turn… Mayor Thomas Menino and Senator John Kerry frame 9 yr old Alexsiana Walker at Boston’s Children’s Hospital. The three joined Senator Ted Kennedy and others at a press conference to call for more federal funding of child health care. ED NOTE little Alexiana is seriously ill with a potential future eyesight loss and her mother lost her employee health care.
(11/03/09-Hyde Park,MA) Mayor Thomas M. Menino, his wife Angela and their granddaughters Samantha and Taylor arrive to vote this morning at the Hemenway School.
(11/04/09-Boston,MA) “Bent But Not Broken” The Morning After Mayor Menino’s 5th victory. Brian Beaton, trash hauler, discarded Menino campaign signs outside of a Southie polling place on Day Boulevard. He commented on how his collections today were almost all Menino signs saying: “He (Menino) doesn’t need his signs anymore but Flaherty will be keeping his, I’m sure”

by markadmin Posted: Wednesday, 3/27/2013I photographed this scene today at exactly 6:46am. I used a 1955 Leica 50mm “Summicron” collapsible lens. Yes, the Old State House’s clock was wrong this morning.
I had the pleasure to shoot with a Leica rangefinder digital camera, the M9P, and two lenses, the 50mm Summicron collapsible from 1955, and a 35mm Summilux 1.4. Really nice tones and color rendering.

Rarely does a city embrace an athlete the way Boston embraced Bobby Orr. I snapped this photo today while working at the Boston Herald, and my phone and twitter account have not stopped ringing since. I certainly know that I have not snapped an award-winning photograph here, rather an everyday, run-of-the-mill photo. The response to the photo is a testament to the power of the relationship between Orr and the city that still loves him.
Problem Dreamliner that had battery fire, still center of attention at Boston’s Logan Airport.
by markadmin Posted: Wednesday, 3/6/2013The Boeing 787 Dreamliner that suffered a battery fire in a cargo-hold in January continues to sit just a few hundred yards away from the where the original incident occurred. All of its Japan Airlines markings have been covered with large white tape and temporary structures are nestled against the jet, forming what appears to be a veritable testing lab.
A new book by Boston’s Stanley Forman, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner.
by markadmin Posted: Monday, 2/18/2013He won consecutive Pulitzers in the mid 1970’s while covering the streets as a Boston Herald news photographer. One was awarded for a horrific scene as a fire escape collapsed during a fire rescue in Boston’s Back Bay. The other was awarded for a photo he snapped of Ted Landsmark, an African American man who happened upon an anti busing protest and was assaulted by an American flag-wielding protester. Lastly, please spread the word regarding cleaning the exhaust pipes of your car before starting the car. The last photo here shows Boston firefighter Steve MacDonald peering into a car where a boy was killed yesterday after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.
