2 Near-Full Moons, 2 Passing Airliners, 6 years apart.

Last night, 6 years after I snapped this photo on the left, I got lucky again with this photo on the right. I was in Mashpee at about 10:45pm when I grabbed a very large lens and waited for this “hole in one.” It took nearly a minute for the jet to go west to east overhead and a little south of my position. The photo on the left was snapped August 26, 2004 from Winthrop. I didn’t realize the significance of the date until I looked up the older photo to compare the two. I believe both were taken at approximately the same time, give or take a 1/2 hour. For the record, I like the older one better because of the trailing contrails.

I awoke at 5am and drove to Boston Municipal Court on the morning of April 21, 2009. I wanted to photograph Philip Markoff, the man dubbed the “craigslist killer.” This man was apprehended just 12 hours earlier, give or take an hour. My usual shift as a staff photographer at the Boston Herald begins at 6:30am, but on this day  I wanted to be first in line so I could secure the coveted “pool photographer” position for this sensational case. The pool photographer is traditionally the first media person who arrives at court, since the court can’t hold more than one still camera and one video (TV) camera. My photographs of Markoff’s arraignment were carried that day in newspapers, websites and magazines, and at least one book cover, around the world. Now they are being viewed again after his jailhouse suicide.  Here are two of my photos from that, and 3 instances of how the photos have been used this time around.

A Father’s Pain in a Lynn Courthouse

The killing of 15 year old Rene Valdez brought me to a Lynn courthouse yesterday. Here is Esvin Merida, father of the victim, during a brief recess in the arraignment of 16 year old suspect Jason Walczak. Here is the Herald story by O’Ryan Johnson.

Yesterday’s Medford Sinkhole Was Strangely Shaped Like a Car.

I have fielded a number of calls and e-mails from viewers who thought that my photo of the beginnings of yesterday’s sinkhole took the resemblance (shape) of an auto. The photo was snapped for the Herald from below route 93 looking up. Check it out.
