I was a witness to many memorable events in 2016, from several nasty building fires, to extreme weather, to a tragic trench collapse. Here are some of these moments. Photos taken on and off my Boston Herald news photographer shift. Thank you to the Herald, and to my subjects, many of whom are first responders.

My year in Boston photos: Memorable, sometimes sad moments from 2016
by markadmin Posted: Wednesday, 12/21/2016Preparations for shooting Boston Light and BIG moon, and the finished product(s).
by markadmin Posted: Wednesday, 7/20/2016I was planning on photographing the moon over Boston Light Wednesday night. Below is the finished product with 3 other photos I shot last night. The moon hid behind haze and clouds for the first several minutes, disrupting my plans to get the moon directly behind the lighthouse. This (below) is the moon at during the first moments that the moon was visible, unfortunately. It just go to show that the best plans are still at the mercy of nature. Very frustrating. When it finally popped up, it was a bit too high for my liking. I will try again to get the pleasing photo that I have been trying for. Prior to the moon shot, I photographed the sun, which was a hot, hazy ball as it was setting over the Tobin Bridge. I also photographed two high altitude planes. I shot all these at Deer Island using a Canon 800mm lens, carried on my back as I rode my bike. HEAVY, for sure. Below the sun and moon photos, are photos of some of the preparations that I needed.

My week of photos included lightning, the moon, lighthouses, & airplanes.
by markadmin Posted: Thursday, 6/23/2016Last week signaled the passing of fifteen years since I photographed an Air India 747 passing directly over the former headquarters of the Boston Herald and “through” a winter’s half moon. The photograph was snapped at approximately 3:30pm on January 2, 2001 using one of the first digital cameras that the Herald had, and a 600mm lens with a 2x teleconverter extender. That made the lens a 1200mm F8. The photograph went on the front page of the Herald on January 3rd and the Associated Press picked up and transmitted it worldwide the same day. The next day over 50 newspapers worldwide ran the photo, with the London Independent, The Irish Times and a paper in Hong Kong being some of the many papers who ran it on the front page. It felt great making such a splash and a connection. I started receiving letters from all over the world about the photo. I even received one letter that was delivered to the Herald in an envelope that simply read: To the person who photographed the jet thru the moon, Boston,MA USA. I am still amazed that the letter made it to me. Thanks to the workers at the main post office at Fort Point Channel, Boston for that one. The photo continued on to numerous magazines and many books, 2 of which are seen below. I did not know what airline it was or where it was headed until I received a call from the FAA in Nashua,NH. They asked me what time it was that I photographed it and told me that it was Air India flying from London Heathrow to JFK in NYC. I made lots of friends worldwide. Thanks, as always for being a viewer of my photos and this website.
Boston moons, airplanes, lightning, weather: Part of my year in photos 2015.
by markadmin Posted: Sunday, 12/27/2015Boston moons, airplanes, lightning, weather: Part of my year in photos 2015 included high altitude jets, severe thunderstorms, rising and setting moons, etc. For the News Photography part of my photos of 2015, please click here. I used a Canon 1Dx camera and Canon lenses 800mm lens, a 100-400mm lens and sometimes a 1.4 extender.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday offered great glimpses of the moon as jet traffic flew by. First, Friday, a Swiss International Airbus A-330 cooperated, then Saturday, a departing British Airways Boeing 747 obliged, and then Sunday saw Boeing 737’s from South West and Sun Country. The weekend fun ended shortly before midnight last night, as a privately owned Moroccan jet charter by the name of Dalia Air, flew through at 35,000′.
I get asked sometimes if a photo is “real”, that is, has it been photoshopped, or is the photo a multiple exposure. I do not use those techniques. Sometimes I get asked about the size of the moon, or sun in a certain photo. Why is it so large? Well, usually when I take a photo of the sun or moon, they are usually positioned low to the horizon anyway. When the moon or sun is low to the horizon, they appear bigger to the human eye. Here is a good explanation from the good people at Old Dominion University. The lens one uses also makes the object appear bigger. This photo was snapped using a Canon 100-400mm lens. 1/30th of a second at F5.6 at 5000 ASA (ISO), on December 26, 2014 at 9:49pm. The moon moves fast and is considerably brighter than the city. This city angle is not as bright as other angles, so my unique problem was to get somewhere in the middle regarding exposure. Give enough to the city in exposure without blowing out the moon. A bonus, especially for Boston, was the nice green tail of the Aer Lingus shamrock, below left. Copies for purchase, of this, and of all my photos, can be found here.
A Supermoon, a dramatic sunrise, and a beautiful rainbow were just some of my photo experiences this past week. Here are my photos.
Last night’s fireworks over Winthrop,MA were delayed for two nights, due to Hurricane Arthur. This was good luck for me as the moon was positioned perfectly above the fireworks. That would not have happened Friday night. 1/125 of a second at F11 at 100asa (ISO) Handheld lens at 200mm.
