by markadmin Posted: Saturday, 9/22/2012I spotted this moment during yesterday’s Scott Brown day-after-debate press conference. Eric Fehrnstrom, top adviser to both Brown and Romney, peers out from behind the press corps assembled at the event at Brown’s Boston headquarters.
Yes, that’s right, September 15, 2012 is Thank a Cop Day, see here. In honor of those people on the blue line, here is a photo I snapped a few nights ago. I can’t think of a better way to say thank you than to show a truly miserable work moment for a cop. This is a traffic stop on Chelsea St. in Charlestown during very heavy rain. This gentleman was stopped because he did not have his lights on. He later put them on during the stop. The police department is the National Park Service, I believe. So, thank you police!
Smoke smell causes international flight to divert to Boston Logan.
by markadmin Posted: Sunday, 9/9/2012A United Boeing 777 landed safely at Logan after a smoke smell was reported inside the aircraft. According to police scanner transmissions from Massport fire command, firefighters were investigating the source of the smell. They were then concerned enough, that they asked that a stair car be brought to the plane to take the passengers off that way as there was not a gateway available immediately. After buses and the stair car were positioned, it was decided not to evacuate in that manner. Please see my photos below.

by markadmin Posted: Sunday, 9/2/2012Dear Mr. Branson, tonight one of your airplanes rudely got in the way of a photograph I was snapping of a near full moon in Boston. Virgin Atlantic flight 12, to be exact, was the culprit. This injustice happened just a few minutes ago. As the CEO of this airline I was hoping you could right this wrong. You understand how certain things can go awry when it’s not your own fault. Maybe a roundtrip freebie to London for my wife and I in exchange for some usage rights for this photo. After all, you are a reasonable man. I know that you, like me, also have a passion for the moon.

An interesting ending to my trip was a last minute switch to a different runway because of a jumbo jet coming up on a rear faster than air traffic expected. We almost reached the Winthriop shoveling, just before the threshold of runway 27, when we veered sharply to the right and flew over Winthrop Shore Drive and then banked left to connect with runway 22Left. by markadmin Posted: Friday, 8/31/2012So you don’t think you could have fun in a “puddle jumping” Cessna 402 that seats under 10 passengers? Think again. I flew to Nantucket Tuesday evening and flew home to Boston last evening. Nantucket was great, but the flights, to and from, came in a surprising 2nd place in the fun category. My travel partner and I departed Logan at 7:25pm on Tuesday evening, on Cape Air airlines. We took off toward the east and banked south over Winthrop’s Deer Island as we headed toward Ack, the Nantucket airport code letters. Our pilot, like a precision field goal kicker, “split the uprites” of two thunderstorms, one near Plymouth and the other east of Plymouth. A beautiful, near full moon also greeted us after clearing the storms. Please see my photos below.
MBTA bus driver’s alleged scrap with a BTD parking enforcement officer.
by markadmin Posted: Thursday, 8/9/2012I heard this call come in just after 8:20am, I believe. The call came in for an MBTA bus involved in a crash with a car. Then it was 2 cars. Then, possibly a pedestrian. I arrived at the Kenmore Square crash site just as first responders were arriving. I snapped these photos of the BTD officer on the ground and then transported, and then snapped a photo of the bus driver, who was later arrested on charges of operating to endanger and assault and battery. I never thought that I would photograph, let alone see, a bear in Brookline, but I did both today. I had just left the Boston Herald en route to a 7:30am assignment to photograph Bobby Valentine and Doc Rivers at Fenway Park. I aborted that when I received a tip about a bear being cornered up in a tree in Brookline. I was aware of this bear because of the many sightings from last night. My plan before the tip was to shoot the assignment at Fenway and then drive toward Brookline and see if there were any more sightings. Anyway, I steamed toward Brookline, got myself steady after a harrowing commute, and tried to get a good angle on this animal. I was very luck to see Mrs. “L”, a friend who’s tree was where the bear was resting. I watched as Brookline and Massachusetts Environmental police weighed their options. They raised a bucket truck with an officer armed with a tranquilizer gun, while on the ground another officer took a different angle. One yellow dart entered the back of the animal, as seen in the bottom photo of both the bear and the armed officer. The officer positioned on the ground was the one who shot the bear. Unfortunately the bear then scampered up the tree to a position approximately 85-100 feet aloft. After several minutes the tranquilizer worked and the groggy bear fell. Mrs. “L” and I both gasped. She was very emotional as it appeared that there would be no chance of survival from that height. The bear crashed through smaller branches as if they were twigs, en route down. We were told by officials that the bear looked to be not injured seriously. Read more at bostonherald.com
