SNOW! On This Date in My Photo History: Dec 17, 2007

As snow is a real possibility this weekend I figured I’d break into my stash of photos and show this photo, that I snapped exactly 3 years ago today. Here, Boston EMS personnel receive a helping hand from civilians in Kenmore Square after their ambulance got stuck in heavy snow.

Before the terror attacks of 2001 I would sometimes hang out near  Logan airport fences, etc to try and get a glimpse of the action. This was most in evidence during lightning storms or interesting light such as with this foggy landing below. Needless to say, I don’t really do this too much anymore due to concerned, well meaning neighbors and an overburdened police force. In short, I don’t need the hassle either. This photo was always one of my favorites, even though there are some technical issues, such as high film (that’s right film) grain. I snapped this 11 years ago tonight. It shows moisture, or wake vortices, coming off the wing tips of this jet. According to Wikipedia: “Wingtip vortices are tubes of circulating air which are left behind a wing as it generates lift. One wingtip vortex trails from the tip of each wing. The cores of vortices spin at very high speed and are regions of very low pressure.” My photo was aided by the fact that another airplane facing me was backlighting the landing plane, so that the moisture coming off the wings really went “electric” once it was backlit. You can see the circles inside these vortices, not unlike a tornado. This was shot for the hobbyist website airliners.net where you can view a portion of my aviation photography images.

I was the pool photographer today at the arraignment of Kimani Washington, who was held on a high bail in connection with cocaine trafficking and firearms charges that could connect him further to the Mattapan quadruple murders. My photos were distributed to all who wanted them, as part of the pool agreement for cameras in the courtroom. Boston Herald reporter Laura Crimaldi wrote the story here.

The family of Levaughn Washum-Garrison, led by his mother Patricia Wasum-Bennett (with sunglasses) is seen at the arraignment of Kimani Washington in Dorchester Court Wednesday morning. Washington was in court in connection with the quadruple homicide in Mattapan late last month.

(09/18/1998-Boston,MA) On the same day that the Judiciary Committee voted to release President William Clinton’s grand jury testimony in the Monica Lewisky scandal, the president arrives at Logan Airport for a fundraiser . Here, he shakes the hand of a son of a secret service agent on the tarmac at Logan. Both photographed while on assignment with the Boston Herald.

AND, BELOW… (09/18/03-Westport,MA) Hurricane Isabel stirs up the surf  at Horseneck Beach as a trusting soul looks on. The storm’s eye moved inland today at the North Carolina coast throwing heavy surf hundreds of mile north.

Photos of Tense East Boston Standoff.

A man wanted on several warrants, holding a shard of glass and a shovel, threatened to jump off  a third floor fire escape and held police at bay for nearly 6 hours. The dramatic sceme played out on East Eagle Street in East Boston yesterday. For the majority of this incident I stayed inside my car with a very large 800mm lens, not wanting him to see me and possibly further complicating the situation or worse. Here is the Herald story by Edward Mason and below are my photos.
