Manny Ramirez in Boston. Ahh, the Manny Memories!

After hearing of Manny’s retirement yesterday, I thought back to the first time that I photographed him for the Boston Herald. It was his first swing as a Red Sox. It was a home run on April 6, 2001 vs, ironically, Tampa Bay, his last team. The first 2 photos here are of that home run, and the last two are taken in 2004. Best of luck Manny!

Turkeys at Longwood Medical Area and Harvard Medical School.

There were two adult turkeys and two juvenile turkeys hanging around the Harvard Medical School area yesterday afternoon when I snapped these photos. At one point, Boston police officer Shawn McCarthy helped by stopping traffic for a brief period as one of the turkeys got a little too comfortable with Longwood avenue’s asphalt surface. Story in today’s Boston Herald.

I photographed tonight’s so called “Super Moon” from the Fish Pier in Southie. I needed some type of scale to show how big the orange, reddish moon was at moonrise. I lucked out. The Spirit of Boston was cruising by just at the right time. The photo was snapped with a Canon 800mm lens 2000ASA with a shutter speed of 1/60th and an aperture of f5.6. The moon is the closest to the earth while being full, hence the largest, in almost 20 years. Check Sunday’s Boston Herald for more.

A St. Patrick’s Day Photo From pictureboston

I snapped this at approximately 4:45pm today and yes, I had the luck of the Irish on my side as an Aer Lingus jet passed by the rising moon. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Shot with a Canon 800mm with a 1.4X extender.

Harp Seal Hangs Out in Houghs Neck Quincy

I photographed this Harp Seal over the weekend. He or she seemed healthy except for a bloated and reddish eye. A biologist at the New England Aquarium says that they are concerned about this seal and have been monitoring it after seeing it in Rockport last week. The aquarium reminds all that the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 prohibits people from getting within 50 feet of any marine mammal and if you see one of these animals, call the aquarium so they can go check it out.

Tonight’s Warm Sunset Over Cold Boston, Aviation Style.

I snapped this photo tonight from Bayswater St. in East Boston. I used a Canon 800mm lens with a 1.4x extender. This jet was flying from the southwest to the northeast when it came upon a dying contrail of another jet that passed this position previously. I have written in the past about my nervousness, or uneasiness, about photographing so close to Logan with such a large lens. I get these nice stares from the neighbors 🙁

The Wayward Coyote on the Frozen Charles.

Here is a small selection of the many photos I snapped today of the coyote who found him or herself  on the frozen Charles River during today’s snowstorm. More photos can be seen here, in the Boston Herald story by clicking the link “Photo Gallery.” Bill Tanguay, an animal technician at the Animal Rescue League of Boston donned a survival suit and hopped on into the Charles. Once the would be rescuer neared the animal, the coyote took off into the middle of the Charles and  was caught a little later.

I had just a few minutes to try and show a small “slice” of yesterday’s post blizzard cleanup, and how it was progressing. I chose Boston’s Logan Airport. Thanks to the good people of MassPort’s snow crew for being out on the runways and taxiways for those few minutes that I had. See the cool machines below. Come on you guys out there, doesn’t this kind of bring you back to being a boy, or was I the only kid who used to peer out snow encrusted windows to watch the snow plows. Photographed on my shift for the Boston Herald.

Pictureboston.com’s Memorable Moments of 2010: Part One.

Here are some of the more memorable moments that I have photographed this year. I am based here in Eastern Massachusetts, so I am “hyper-local” if you will. One won’t find any international, or even national for that matter, photos in this collection. What one will find here is immediate news, or as we in the news industry call it, “spot news.”  All these photos were taken by me and were snapped mostly on my shift at the Boston Herald, for whom I want to give a big shout out to and a thank you. Most of the following photos have photo galleries attached to them, so one can click on the photo and a series of photos from that event will pop up. Thanks for viewing and Happy New Year!
