My Photos & Thoughts on the Deadly Boston Trench Collapse

While on the 7th hour of my Friday shift as a Boston Herald staff news photographer, I was summoned to  Beacon Hill for photo coverage of the Herald’s Home of the Week. I started that way from Melnea Cass Boulevard, near Northeastern University. While driving on Tremont St., approaching the traffic lights at Dartmouth St., I noticed the leading edge of what appeared to look like an ocean tide encroaching on a beach. This torrent of water, rolling down Dartmouth St., was quite strong. There was no audio from my police/fire radios regarding an event/emergency of this type, but I stopped anyway thinking this was newsworthy and might make for interesting photos.  I parked, still thinking that I was going to photograph a short-lived apparent water main break. It was then that I heard police sirens. I started to take photos, but when I came upon the scene something seemed different. A police sergeant told me to leave the street, and the faces of workers, neighbors, police, and shortly thereafter Boston firefighters, told a story of anguish and deep concern. It was shortly thereafter that I learned that one, and then another worker was presumed trapped. Steve Smith, a construction laborer working close by, and who was on a break when he heard screaming, sprung into action as he tried to reach the trapped workers. He tried to enter the hole but dangerous conditions forced him back. I retreated to the sidewalk and watched, then photographed, as he was reaching into the water to attempt to find the street plates covering part of the trench. On his hands and knees he finally found the part of the heavy plates where a chain can be affixed, to then lift with a backhoe. Smith seemed to pause for a split second, as exhaustion and grief overwhelmed him. Boston firefighters used sticks with hooks on the end to try and hook the workers, but to no avail. A very sad day. My photos appeared on page one and inside the October 22, 2016 issue of the Boston Herald.

From young ballerinas readying for their first-of-the-year recital, to a man threatening to jump off the Tobin Bridge, 2015 had many memorable moments that I witnessed. Here are some of them. Photos taken on and off my Boston Herald shift. Thank you to the Herald, and to my subjects, many of whom are first responders.

Memorable, tragic moments from my year in Boston photos, 2014.

From an apartment building fire in Lowell that killed 7, to a Back Bay brownstone that killed two brave firefighters, the tragic moments from my 2014 were plentiful. A Revere tornado in the summer is still causing pain to the  homeless victims. A sunrise shines off of windows on Drydock Ave. There were also happy outcomes, like Sylvie, the Southie Husky who ended up stuck in ice off Castle Island and who was rescued by Boston firefighter Sean Coyle. Many of these photographs were taken during my 6:30am shift for the Boston Herald. There are also some aviation photos here, my passionate pastime. Thanks for viewing and being a friend. Please check out my new website.

Left on the cutting room floor. Home for unwanted photos.

Every day I snap photos that, for some reason or another, don’t see the light of day regarding being published. They may not be strong enough in the quality department, or they just might not be relevant. Some photos, like the dog in traffic being “chauffeured” in a bright red car, the American flag in Winthrop, or these airplanes on a cloudy day were shot either en route to photo assignments or with no intention of having them published. The helicopter from the North Andover Flight Academy, happened to be flying at sunset over my Somerville neighborhood. I was fascinated at how my lens was able to magnify these two passengers so powerfully. The photo of the old man talking to Boston police East Boston district Captain Kelley McCormick has a funny story to it, in an otherwise sad event. This photo was snapped this morning at the homicide of a man on Chelsea St. in Eastie. This man, in his nineties, would not give me his name. Instead, he gave me a good laugh, which I will explain at the end. The photo shows him arriving to his house, which is next to the murder scene. He is very concerned about what is happening, as he has just stumbled upon the goings-on next door. Captain McCormick gently tells him what has happened and where he can and cannot proceed to. I approached him for his name and to find out if he knew anything or anyone regarding the crime. He said no, but motioned me to come closer so that he could whisper something in my ear. I came closer and put my ear to near his mouth and he said, “closer”, so I went closer. He then said, referring to the crime: “I did it.” He was great. He had a smile from ear to ear. Thanks for reading.

Pictureboston.com’s Memorable Moments of 2010: Part One.

Here are some of the more memorable moments that I have photographed this year. I am based here in Eastern Massachusetts, so I am “hyper-local” if you will. One won’t find any international, or even national for that matter, photos in this collection. What one will find here is immediate news, or as we in the news industry call it, “spot news.”  All these photos were taken by me and were snapped mostly on my shift at the Boston Herald, for whom I want to give a big shout out to and a thank you. Most of the following photos have photo galleries attached to them, so one can click on the photo and a series of photos from that event will pop up. Thanks for viewing and Happy New Year!

(07/10/2010-Somerville,MA) Christine Broderick awaits rescue as flood waters pour into the Route 28 underpass near Mystic Ave. Firefighter Mike Marino, while off-duty was able to swim out to the stranded woman and help her swim to safety with the aid of State police and Somerville fire dept.

(04/07/10-Boston,Mass) Boston firefighters work the scene of a 9 alarm fire at 483 Beacon Street.

Boston, Mass runners are seen in their Speedo clothing saturday, December 11, 2010 during the 11th annual Santa Speedo Run.

Fisher College Police Sgt, S.A Egidio is seen comforting a driver involved in an accident June 3, 2010, at Clarendon Street and Commonwealth Avenue.

(09/15/10-East Boston,MA) A man, armed with a shard of glass and a shovel, holds police at bay today at 337 East Eagle St. He was making indications that he might jump from this 3rd floor fire escape. He finally climbed into a window and was then secured by police nearly 6 hours later.
