Boston firefighter Michael Browne, in top photo, checks on an injured Cooper Hawk that caused quite a
scene this afternoon outside of the Langham Hotel on Boston’s Franklin St. The Hawk, at one point, was
perched atop a Langham awning. The Hawk was removed by Boston animal control. See my photos below.
My photos below show the 7th annual Hub On Wheels citywide bike ride, which filled Storrow Drive westbound this morning. According to the sponsoring group’s website, hubonwheels.org, (HOW) was founded in 2005 with three goals: create an important civic event, showcase Boston’s neighborhoods and parks, and raise money for important causes. The routes looped through Downtown, the Back Bay, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Dorchester,and Southie.
I used an 800mm lens for last night’s setting sun, seen from Bayswater street in East Boston. I then turned the camera around and photographed this jet lineup, with Cape Air leading the big boys.
I snapped this photo today, September 11, 2011, showing Boston firefighters from Ladder 17 and Engine 7, standing at attention at the exact moment, ten years later, of the second World Trade tower collapse.

The scene in Swampscott today as salvage crews worked along Fisherman’s Beach and other boats sat idle on King’s Beach after washing ashore in yesterday’s storm. See my photos below.
As a Boston Herald photographer, I was covering the evacuations of 3 large Brookline buildings due to possible structural concerns after today’s quake. I looked up, and there she was. A United Arab Emirates Airbus Super 380. That’s right, the double decker jet that can carry nearly 600 people. This was one of the many diverted airplanes from NYC and the Washington DC area due to the earthquake. No further info.
It was felt in Washington DC, New York City and here in Boston. I bet the outdoor temperature was the same, or off by a degree or two. The sky was the same deep blue. There was the same rush to make a cell phone call. As we approach the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, this natural occurring event brought back, vividly, the memories of that awful day. No disrespect meant whatsoever to the 2977 heroes that died on that day. This comparison is only in feeling, and not in emotion, etc. I did not feel the earth shake today when my Boston Herald photo editor diverted me from a regularly scheduled photo assignment. I was to go to Brookline where there were three Beacon street buildings that were being evacuated due to structural concerns. In the moments after the 2001 attacks, I was also sent onto the streets to photograph shocked people. I would eventually make my way through 2 hours of traffic to get from Boston’s South End to Logan, to cover that end of that horrible new event. Today’s photos were thankfully less pain-filled. I happened upon this as I was in Swampscott yesterday afternoon. From twitter reports and what I witnessed, it appears that 2 boys, floating on an inflatable “donut”, were blown out to sea at Preston beach by the strong west wind, and that an aunt of one of the boy’s swam out to try and save them. All three were corralled by the Marblehead Harbormaster and then brought to shore by Marblehead firefighters. See my photos below.
I photographed this departing airliner as lightning struck in front and to the west of it today. A fierce explosion of lightning bolts lit up the dark afternoon sky above eastern Massachusetts. See this in Saturday’s Herald.
