Sometimes things aren’t always what they appear to be. Two bus passengers were arrested at the scene of Thursday’s bus/”bomb” standoff in Portsmouth, NH, but the man who was at the center of this, a foreign national from Africa with a limited english vocabulary etc, was NOT arrested. John Smolens was one of two men arrested. He for resisting arrest for his behavior exiting the bus, and the other man for obstructing justice. Here you will see Smolens exiting the bus with his hands fully extended in the air and then his hands come down. He is then hustled, in hand cuffs, to a waiting cruiser. A few seconds later, pants still unbuckled for reasons unknown, he is moved toward the parking garage with the other passengers. Here is my Boston Herald photo gallery from that day.

A very long standoff that purportedly involved hostages and explosives, ended last night. I arrived in Portsmouth at approximately 1pm and saw this to fruition. The grand finale photos, if you will, were the first photos that I can ever remember where I did not see the subject for the majority of time. For all you photography fanatics out there, my setting on this surrender photo was: “Film Speed” 3200asa, Shutter Speed 1/20th of a second at F5.6 aperture with a Canon 800mm 5.6 on a tripod. The light that is shining on the suspect is from police and street lights. A Boston Herald photo gallery is seen here.
