Tomorrow marks the 16th anniversary of the Worcester Cold Storage & Warehouse Company fire that killed six firefighters. The dead included: FF Jeremiah Lucey, Timothy Jackson, Jeremiah Lucey, James Lyons III, Joseph McGuirk, and fire Lt. Thomas Spencer. Some of my photos from that week are seen below, as I was on assignment for the Boston Herald.

The search goes on for the remaining missing Worcester Firefighters.

I shot this, below, a 7 frame multiple exposure of the lunar eclipse, from Memorial Drive in Cambridge. There was no “photoshop” or “stacking” post process. This was an in-camera production.  I used a tripod, a Canon EOS- 1DX camera, a Canon 100-400mm 11 lens, and a Canon 24-105mm lens. I also used a sharpie magic marker and a piece of clear tape, I will explain the tape and marker later. I used the short zoom lens to shoot the skyline. I then used the 100-400mm, at 400mm, to shoot the moon’s phases at roughly 14 minute intervals, by using the Live View function of the camera. That is, I viewed, live, the scene from the large screen on the back of the 1DX. That is how I used the tape and marker to help me line up the moon(s). The moon’s exposures started out at 500asa (iso) at 1/1000th of a second at F5.6-ish, and then I gradually had to compensate for the shadow by giving it some more time, like 1/500th, 1/250th and so on down the line unit a very slow shutter speed was needed to get the red in the last moon. There is some artistic license involved here, i.e the moons are bigger in my photo and lower than one would have seen with the naked eye. My shot appeared in the September 28th edition of the Boston Herald.

Boston firefighters work at scene of 3 alarm fire Friday.

Boston firefighters worked a hot fire yesterday on Waverly St., in Roxbury. The Dudley Sq. crew, comprised of Ladder 4 and Engine 14 and Safety Chief H-1, was first on the scene. Here are some of my photos from yesterday, and here is the Boston Herald story.

A good 72 hours for #Boston weather photography.

Moons, clouds, rainbows and lightning, oh my, A good few days for capturing the natural, near my home in Winthrop,MA. I even managed to get a British Airways Boeing 777, flying from Newark to London, to cross the moon for me, at 7 miles high 🙂

The man who climbed the Tobin Bridge shortly after the conclusion of last Wednesday’s evening commute had many first responders looking out for his well being. Police scanner broadcasts indicated that Boston EMS, Firefighters and Police from Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts State Police, and US Coast Guard sent units to the bridge. Boston Fire sent its Technical Rescue Unit, and Boston and Massachusetts State Police sent hostage negotiators. They were all very patient, as this effort took 2 hours. I was on scene to photograph, actually 1900 feet away in East Boston, according to Google Earth, when this drama played out. Photos below show an airbag inflated near Boston Fire’s Tower Ladder 3 on the upper deck roadway, a hostage negotiator with a bullhorn, and rescue boats in the water below. At one point the man can be seen inside one of the open air windows inside a steel beam, peering out. A first responder on scene told me later that night that the man had an amazing grip. The event was quite pressure packed for me. I hoped rescuers would save the man and did not want to see him fall. The final photo shows the man beginning his climb to safety. Below are several of my photos, including one that appeared in the Boston Herald. Herald colleagues, Matt Stone and Christopher Evans were also on scene, and their photos can be seen at the following link.

The Boston Herald sent me to Boylston St. this morning for a very special event. Adrianne Haslet-Davis, Boston Marathon bombing survivor, was to dance at the marathon finish line this morning with her partner Shane Crellin, of Carver,MA. The dance was part of a video ad campaign for Oberto Beef Jerky. Here are my photos of the dance as well as a light moment when Adrianne was greeted by a nearby construction crew.

Memorable, tragic moments from my year in Boston photos, 2014.

From an apartment building fire in Lowell that killed 7, to a Back Bay brownstone that killed two brave firefighters, the tragic moments from my 2014 were plentiful. A Revere tornado in the summer is still causing pain to the  homeless victims. A sunrise shines off of windows on Drydock Ave. There were also happy outcomes, like Sylvie, the Southie Husky who ended up stuck in ice off Castle Island and who was rescued by Boston firefighter Sean Coyle. Many of these photographs were taken during my 6:30am shift for the Boston Herald. There are also some aviation photos here, my passionate pastime. Thanks for viewing and being a friend. Please check out my new website.

I met Peter Pan in Nantucket in 2011.

Allison Williams, star of tonight’s live NBC broadcast of Peter Pan, and daughter of NBC news anchor Brian Williams, is seen at the  2011 Nantucket Film Festival. I was covering the film festival with Laura Raposa, former Inside Track columnist at the Boston Herald. Williams was nice, personable. One could see her stardom coming. Brian is quite personable and extremely funny, usually telling jokes on the red carpet. I took a family portrait and emailed it to Jane Williams, Brian’s wife, who, I believe, used the photo for their Christmas card.
