Searchers on both land and sea continue to scour the area of Rockport’s Long Beach for missing 2-year-old Caleigh Anne Harrison today. Here, a Rockport police officer peers into the Atlantic, a diver is helped from the water and Rockport firefighters search the beach.

I was driving east on Storrow when I saw this overturned car in the westbound lanes. A Massachusetts state trooper was rendering aid to the victim, who was laying inside and underneath the rolled vehicle. I parked under the Longfellow bridge and put on a lime green highway vest. News photographers on the highway, in essence, become highway workers so we are told to wear these vests. I crossed Storrow and came to a position at the median strip fence approximately 25 feet from the action. More troopers were arriving and one came over to me and asked what I was doing, etc. I told him that I was a photographer with the Herald and that I would “keep my distance” and not get too close and that I wasn’t going to move forward from my perch standing on the jersey barrier. I noticed the original trooper trying to calm the victim and, at the same time, ascertain what his injuries were. One man who had also stopped to render aid did not approve of my presence and stood in my view between the victim and my camera lens. I had to employ the old bob-and- weave method, all the while hoping that there would be some interaction, maybe a touch, between the two. I kept bobbing and the other by-stander kept weaving, and then it happened. State trooper Kevin Nichols reached out and lightly stroked the man’s leg while saying “hang in there.” It was a nice, subtle moment. I was glad to have captured it. Shortly afterward the Boston fire department took over and extricated the man. All in a day’s work for these officials.
I arrived at the scene on Route 190S in Sterling long after authorities had left. I needed several moments, driving up and down the highway, to find the scene. I finally noticed fresh tire tracks leading to a rock wall, which led to an area on the snow that obviously had just supported a rolled over vehicle. From the divots in the dirt and snow, it seemed obvious that the car rolled several times after hitting the rock wall. Since the car was a Ford Crown Victoria, I was not sure that I had the correct accident because it appeared that the tire tracks were from a double wheeled truck. I realized that Tim Murray’s account of the accident had him exiting the road onto the shoulder in a skid. In a skid the left side front and rear tires will make skid marks adjacent to each other, as will the right front and rear tires, so I felt comfortable that this was his tire marks and not, let’s say, the tow truck coming to pick his car up. This was a sad news event to cover for sure as word of the death of firefighter James Rice started to spread to working firefighters at 5 Hancock street. See my photos below.

As so many families were getting ready to sit with family and feast on all the good things Thanksgiving has to offer, Boston firefighters, EMS and police were responding to a multi-vehicle accident. They eased the pain of a small child, an infant and several adults who were hurt in the late morning accident that occurred near the Broadway bridge. Please see my photos below. At the Brookline birthplace of our nation’s only Catholic president, Father Brian Clary of ST. Mary of the Assumption Church sprinkled holy water to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the killing of President John F. Kennedy. The staff of JFK’s birthplace, including National Park Servicemen Jim Roberts and Patrick Franzen, laid a wreath at the Beals Street home. Please see my photos of yesterday’s ceremony below.
Arthur Pollock, an award winning local news photographer, bursts onto the art book stage with his first book, aptly titled, “Arthur Pollock.” This collection of moments, published by Unpiano Books, takes us from the author’s beginnings in photography as a college student in Wisconsin, through his time with the Lowell Sun and ending with his decades at the Boston Herald. The book’s editor, Jesse Pollock, is the proud son of the author. Jesse says of the initial work going through the countless amounts of photos: ““I went through a thousand photos and 900 made my jaw drop. That’s just the kind of photographer he is.. ..everything is put together for a reason, whether thematically or aesthetically. I tried to go chronologically and snake my way through his career from the ’60s to the ’80s. Within that timeline, I tried to go with other sub-themes like crime or love.
I chose a lot of the photos because they’re continuously relevant. They’re still fresh in a way that doesn’t make them seem like they’re from ’60s. You could run a lot of them with no captions, and people would think they were taken recently based on the way they’re shot. Not all of his work is like that, but I curated it in a certain way and chose photos for that reason.
Photojournalists don’t really like to talk about their work as art because it’s more of a group dynamic; you’re on a team. It’s blue collar, like a firefighter. And you don’t say, ‘I’m the best firefighter.’ It’s hard for him to put his work out there like that. He doesn’t think of it as art. He’ll think of it as a photojournalism exhibition. The nearest art category you could throw it into is street photography, but I don’t think of it like that. It has a hard, journalistic viewpoint at heart.”
